How To Drain Freon From Car

Freon can create some issues for your car’s AC. Use this step-by-step guide to drain any excess freon from your car.

What To Know About Freon For Your Car’s AC

Freon is not solely used in vehicles, as this gas has recently been used in chest and upright freezers, as well. These days, many commercial and industrial appliances utilize freon cold storage and transportation inside large warehouses. Dehumidifiers may also use freon, in some cases.

Freon works thanks to a system of compressions and coils within an AC unit. Once compressed, the gas will get very hot. Freon will move through the coils to ultimately produce a cool liquid. This is a constant cycle within the AC system in your car.

If the coolant leaks, the system will stop blowing out cold air, making repairs a necessity, especially during the hot Arizona summers. It is quite easy to determine whether or not your car is using this gas. Check the AC’s nameplate to see if freon is being used.

The nameplate will provide detailed information about your AC system, including safety certifications and electrical ratings. Contact the system’s manufacturer if you cannot find the nameplate or interpret its information.

How To Drain Freon From Your Car’s AC

If you wish to remove any excess freon from your car, follow this step-by-step guide below.

  • Start by putting on some protective equipment before attempting this task.
  • Find the low-pressure AC service port featured under the hood.
  • To locate the port, check your owner’s manual or search the back of the AC compressor.
  • The smaller of the two ports you will find is the low-pressure port.
  • Use a wrench to close the low-pressure service valve.
  • Now attach a car AC recovery machine to condense the freon to vapor, which removes it from the system.
  • Re-open your low-pressure port.
  • Purchase a new can of freon and attach it to the low-pressure port.
  • Turn your car on and run the AC for a few minutes to ensure it is working properly.
  • Press the plunger to release the freon into the AC system.
